In a previous post, I mentioned that by using fishing string above the 4-foot-high electric fence, we were able to trick the deer. It worked for 2 years, but not this year. We didn’t make it visible enough, so now we are using colored string and taller sticks so they can see it better.
Gardening with deer can be compared to raising teens in today’s society. This year we noticed several very young deer without their mother. These young deer don’t know the dangers they face with electric fences and fast-paced roads they have to cross. When I went out to check the garden this morning, the electric fence was down, and some of the plastic posts were broken. I can imagine what happened when they jumped the fence: they got tangled in the electric fence and couldn’t find their way out. They didn’t know the rules, so to speak, of keeping safe. There was no adult to teach them, they saw the nice green plants and decided to take some.
I thought about teens today getting involved in things that they shouldn’t. Sometimes they have no fear because they see and hear from society and friends that it’s ok, but then when they do want out, they become tangled up and can’t find their way out. God made people and animals to be trained by their elders.
The first picture shows the broken fence and the second one after it was repaired and extended.
